Anthropic’s new Fable release is cheaper, less restrictive
Anthropic unveiled Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 on Tuesday, introducing the latest iterations of its most advanced AI models. Fable 5.1, the unrestricted version, is now accessible via cloud platforms and the Anthropic API, while Mythos 5.1 remains limited to registered Anthropic partners working in cybersecurity or life‑sciences research. Both models feature performance upgrades, reduced token costs, and fewer false‑positive restrictions from built‑in safeguards. A notable addition is Anthropic’s zero‑data‑retention policy, enabling clients to run the models on their own infrastructure without data leaving their premises. Although previously unavailable for Fable due to security concerns, a high‑privacy service called Enterprise Frontier Safeguards will launch in the fall, allowing customers to control misuse monitoring while the system continues to watch for abusive behavior. Anthropic reiterated that it has never trained on enterprise data without explicit permission and will not do so.
The release also brings a suite of benchmark achievements and scientific outputs. Fable and Mythos 5.1 set new records on tests such as Terminal‑Bench 4.0 for command‑line coding and Humanity’s Last Exam for general reasoning. Anthropic disclosed three novel scientific findings generated by the models before launch, including a custom GPU optimization and a high‑resolution map of Venus compiled from existing imagery. Accompanying the models is a detailed system card that rates Mythos as “low‑risk” for concerns about automated AI self‑improvement, noting that its capacity to accelerate internal AI R&D aligns with current trends. Compared with Opus 5, Mythos 5.1 shows a slight regression in overall misaligned behavior but improves on earlier Mythos and Claude Sonnet versions, being less likely to ignore explicit constraints, hallucinate inputs, or falsely claim task completion.
The broader implications touch on both industry practice and regulatory scrutiny. By offering zero‑data‑retention and client‑controlled monitoring, Anthropic positions itself to meet heightened privacy demands from enterprises wary of data outflows, potentially expanding adoption in sensitive sectors. The system card’s acknowledgment of a modest increase in cooperation with misuse—though offset by stronger safeguards—highlights ongoing tensions between model capability and alignment. As the high‑privacy Enterprise Frontier Safeguards roll out later this year, users will gain more autonomy over how misuse detection is performed, a move that may set a precedent for other AI providers. The benchmark successes and scientific contributions underscore Anthropic’s continued push to demonstrate technical leadership while navigating the delicate balance of safety, privacy, and performance in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
