Buddhist monk arrested in suspected $3m embezzlement scandal

Phra Wachirayan Wi, a 66‑year‑old former abbot of the historic 14th‑century Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya, was arrested on Friday after police uncovered a suspected embezzlement scheme involving more than 20 instances of misappropriating donations over a two‑year period. The scandal follows a high‑profile sex‑and‑blackmail case involving senior monks that erupted a year earlier, prompting the government to launch a hotline for reporting “misbehaving monks” after at least nine were found to have engaged in sexual acts that were later used for extortion.

Authorities believe the scheme may have involved two or three additional accomplices, and the ongoing investigation will determine the full extent of the network that facilitated the embezzlement. The fallout is likely to deepen public scrutiny of the monastic community, especially as the monk’s reputation was bolstered by his creation of a coveted coin amulet owned by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
