Dutch health institute issues 'red alert' over Trump-shaped ecstasy pills
A Dutch drug‑addiction and mental‑health institute has issued a “red alert” warning about ecstasy pills shaped like former U.S. President Donald Trump, after several samples turned up at testing centres in August containing a dangerously high concentration of the chemical PMMA. The Utrecht‑based Trimbos Institute cautioned that the pills, which bear Trump’s likeness on one side and the words “Trump” and “NL” on the other, should not be used under any circumstances because the substance can cause severe overheating and potentially fatal outcomes.
The institute explained that PMMA (para‑methoxymethamfetamine) is chemically similar to MDMA, the active ingredient in typical ecstasy, but its effects are delayed and often lack the usual stimulating component, raising the risk of overdose. Users may not feel immediate effects, leading them to take additional doses, and later experience nausea, rapid heart rate, convulsions, or other serious symptoms hours after ingestion. Although the Trimbos Institute reported no confirmed deaths or serious illnesses linked to these Trump‑shaped pills, it highlighted the heightened danger posed by the delayed action of PMMA.
The warning comes amid a broader context in which ecstasy remains popular in the Netherlands despite its illegality; a 2024 government report noted that 550,000 people had used the drug at least once in 2022, a record high. The Trump‑themed pills are not the first politically themed ecstasy designs, underscoring a trend of novel, potentially hazardous street‑level drug variations that challenge public‑health monitoring and enforcement efforts.
