Dutch police arrest suspected member of group that claimed FBI hack

Dutch police arrested a 24‑year‑old man from Amsterdam on 15 September on suspicion of belonging to the ShinyHunters hacking collective, which claimed to have breached multiple FBI systems the week before. The suspect was taken into custody before the alleged intrusion, and authorities seized his devices, finding a “large amount of information” on his laptop, including details of two planned murders abroad that police believe he may have ordered. The arrest follows ShinyHunters’ claim that it accessed the FBI’s Oracle‑based cloud storage on 21 September, extracting data from FBIJOBS, FBI BEAST, FBI MedLink and FBI BICS, and then sharing screenshots and samples with journalists on the dark web. The group, which originated in France and has previously targeted Rockstar Games and the education platform Canvas, said it did not seek money but demanded the FBI withdraw a May advisory that labeled the collective as “threat actors” who exploit alleged data breaches for extortion. The FBI confirmed the authenticity of a small portion of the leaked material, which includes agents’ personal details such as badge numbers, home addresses, phone numbers and even blood and urine test results.

U.S. officials praised the Dutch cooperation; FBI director Kash Patel thanked their partners while FBI Cyber assistant director Brett Leatherman urged remaining members to surrender, warning that continued involvement only deepens exposure. The incident has heightened concerns over the security of government cloud services and underscored the transnational nature of cybercrime, prompting both agencies to intensify collaborative efforts to track and dismantle the ShinyHunters network.
