Gateless Smart Underwrite earns AZP Platinum AI certification
AZP Insurance Specialists has awarded its highest AI Mortgage Technology Certification, the Platinum designation, to Gateless Smart Underwrite, an artificial‑intelligence‑driven mortgage underwriting platform. The certification marks Gateless as the first technology provider to meet AZP’s rigorous framework, which assesses governance, auditability, operational maturity and risk management. AZP highlighted that the platform has processed more than 230,000 loans without any reported claims, underscoring its reliability and the effectiveness of its risk controls. The Platinum level sits at the top of four certification tiers and opens a pathway for the technology to be covered by insurance‑backed protection for certain representation‑and‑warranty (R&W) risks, including repurchase losses, under a Lloyd’s of London policy underwritten by Munich Re.
The certification reflects a broader industry shift toward demanding transparent, accountable AI solutions in mortgage underwriting. AZP noted that its predecessor organizations have placed rep‑and‑warranty insurance on over five million mortgages, representing more than $2 trillion in principal balances, illustrating the scale at which such risk‑mitigation mechanisms operate. By meeting AZP’s standards, Gateless demonstrates that AI can satisfy lender expectations for measurable performance, strong controls and clear audit trails, addressing growing concerns about governance and financial risk as AI adoption expands across loan manufacturing. The platform’s blend of expert systems, robotic process automation, machine learning and vision‑based AI, combined with mortgage‑industry expertise since its 2020 founding, positions it to meet these heightened expectations.
Gateless’ president, Rick Lang, emphasized that the Platinum certification validates the company’s commitment to earning lender confidence through demonstrable results and transparency. With the certification, lenders using Smart Underwrite can now access separate insurance‑backed protection for R&W exposures, potentially reducing the cost of repurchase losses and enhancing overall loan portfolio stability. The achievement also signals to the broader mortgage market that AI‑driven underwriting solutions can achieve the rigorous standards required for large‑scale deployment, potentially accelerating the adoption of automated underwriting processes and influencing future regulatory and insurance frameworks within the industry.
