Powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake hits Panama, damaging buildings
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama just before 15:00 local time (20:00 GMT) on Friday, with its epicentre about 10 km from the town of Pitaloza Arriba in south‑central Panama. The US Geological Survey reported that roughly 4.6 million people felt moderate to severe shaking, describing the impact as “likely to be widespread.” Video footage circulating online showed collapsed structures in the towns of Penonomé and Soná, including a cathedral side wall and spire, as well as a nearly demolished hotel. In the Herrera province, 74‑year‑old resident Ricardo Brown said his home in Las Minas suffered cracking, leaving him and his spouse fearful of further collapse. Although no casualties have been confirmed, the quake’s shallow depth of 12 km heightened surface damage, and several large aftershocks were reported shortly after the main event.
The tremor prompted tsunami warnings for eleven neighboring countries, but the US Tsunami Warning System later confirmed there was no imminent threat. In Panama City, about 200 km from the epicentre, residents evacuated buildings, gathering in streets and parks while debris fell from rooftops. President José Raúl Mulino announced that the entire government was mobilising to respond, urging calm and warning against alarm or disorder. The Panama Canal, a critical conduit between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, remained operational, according to the authority overseeing marine traffic.
The quake arrives only three days before a national evacuation drill designed to prepare for a major seismic event, underscoring the urgency of preparedness measures. It also follows a series of destructive earthquakes earlier in the year in Colombia and Venezuela, highlighting a pattern of heightened seismic activity across the region. The full extent of structural damage and any longer‑term disruptions remain unclear as authorities assess the aftermath and continue to monitor aftershocks.
