Smartphone LED detects hidden cameras with AI

A team of researchers at South Korea’s Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has unveiled SweepLED, a low‑cost device that uses a smartphone’s LED flash combined with artificial‑intelligence algorithms to spot concealed surveillance cameras, achieving a detection accuracy of 94 percent. The prototype, built around a 10,000‑won (approximately $7.50) LED module, works by illuminating a room with the phone’s light, capturing the reflected light with the camera, and then processing the image through a neural‑network model trained to recognize the distinctive glint and lens reflections of hidden cameras.

The development addresses growing concerns over illicit spying in private spaces such as hotel rooms, changing rooms, and rental properties, where miniature cameras can be easily hidden in everyday objects. Traditional detection methods often rely on expensive infrared scanners or manual visual inspections, limiting their accessibility for everyday users. By leveraging the ubiquitous hardware of modern smartphones and a lightweight AI model, SweepLED offers a scalable, affordable solution that can be deployed by consumers without specialized equipment, potentially democratizing personal privacy protection.

Initial testing involved scanning a variety of concealed camera types under different lighting conditions, with the AI correctly identifying hidden lenses in the majority of cases while maintaining a low false‑positive rate. The researchers plan to refine the algorithm further and explore integration into commercial smartphone apps, aiming to provide real‑time alerts to users. If widely adopted, the technology could pressure illicit surveillance operators and encourage stricter enforcement of privacy regulations, while giving individuals a practical tool to verify the safety of their personal environments.
