The origins of Partner’s computer case
In 1983 the newly merged Slovenian firm Iskra Delta launched the Partner microcomputer, aiming to secure a strong foothold in the domestic market with a competitively priced, mass‑produced system for businesses, institutions and schools. Because the company’s own manufacturing capacity was limited, it sourced key components abroad: printed circuit boards were fabricated in Italy, while the distinctive enclosures that gave the Partner its recognizable look were produced in England. After the Italian boards arrived in Ljubljana they were populated with electronic parts, tested and then installed into the English‑made cases together with the display units, creating a fully assembled computer that ran CP/M 2.2 on Zilog Z80‑based hardware.
The Partner’s design exemplifies the shift from wholly self‑contained computer production to an open, component‑based approach that began with minicomputers and accelerated with microcomputers and the IBM PC. By integrating internationally available chips, storage drives and firmware with locally adapted software, Iskra Delta could enter a crowded market without the heavy investment required for in‑house component fabrication. This reliance on foreign suppliers made effective advertising and market positioning crucial, while also highlighting the growing importance of domestic technical support and ergonomic design—evidenced by the later graphical version’s award‑winning case created by Vid Brataševec at the Mak design studio in Koper.
Subsequent iterations of the Partner reflected evolving industry standards: a 1985 graphical model added basic graphics and LAN capabilities and belonged to the Triglav family of terminals, while a 1987 version switched to Intel 80286 processors, MS‑DOS compatibility and a horizontal desktop case that matched the Triglav aesthetic, sometimes being marketed as a workstation. The Computer Museum’s collection, which includes five Partner units from different periods, has used the original case of the first model to illustrate how 1980s computer manufacturing blended global supply chains with local design expertise, offering a tangible case study of the broader transformation in the computer industry during that decade.
