Gatwick Airport faced water outage after main burst
Source: BBC Business โ
A burst water main in a field near Horley caused a supply outage that left parts of Gatwick Airport without water on Thursday, affecting both terminals. SES Water located the break and began repairs, rerouting its network to restore pressure, while airport officials confirmed that the disruption halted water flow to toilets in the North Terminal and limited services in the South Terminal. Despite the shortage, flights continued as scheduled and food outlets in the North Terminal remained open for seating only, with the airport thanking passengers for their patience.
The incident follows a similar major outage in July, when a power failure at a nearby treatment works shut off running water across both terminals for several hours, forcing long queues for toilets and the temporary closure of restaurants and bars. Passengers this time expressed heightened frustration, noting the lack of information and the inconvenience of being unable to wash hands, especially for those on longer journeys. The recurrence underscores ongoing vulnerabilities in the airportโs water infrastructure and the reliance on external utilities for essential services.
SES Waterโs head of networks, Anthony Rochester, said water supplies to the airport and surrounding areas have been restored, though flow is not yet fully reโestablished throughout all buildings. Gatwick Airportโs spokesperson reported that toilets are now available, food and beverage outlets are reopening, and all flights are proceeding as planned. The water company continues to work closely with airport management to fully normalize service, while officials pledge to keep passengers updated as the situation evolves.
