Canva releases its first image generation model

Canva has launched its first proprietary image‑generation model, named Canva Craft, making it available to all users on its design platform. Developed by Canva’s own research team, the model is designed to compete with similar offerings from Google, OpenAI, ByteDance and Meta. Canva Craft operates in two stages: the initial stage interprets a user’s text prompt and creates a detailed plan that includes spatial relationships, scale, visual hierarchy and information for text generation; the second stage produces an image up to 2,048‑pixel resolution in any of roughly 30 aspect ratios suitable for different platforms. The approach is intended to deliver images with accurate object details and legible text, while allowing precise edits that do not affect other parts of the picture.
The model was trained on designs rather than photographs, using human‑crafted templates from Canva’s extensive library of posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus and typography‑rich layouts. This design‑focused training enables generated images to be converted into layered designs through Canva Magic, the company’s image‑to‑design transformer, and builds on a prior model released last year that could understand designs and layers. Canva Craft is accessible via the Dream Lab tab on the platform and will also be offered through the Canva API, with plans to integrate image generation into third‑party chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini via Canva’s MCP. The company is developing two faster, cost‑efficient variants—Craftfast and Craft‑ultrafast—that are slated for release soon.
Canva’s rollout of its own model is expected to reduce reliance on external image‑generation APIs, lowering costs while improving quality and speed control for the platform. The development follows Canva’s 2024 acquisition of media‑generation startup Leonardo.ai, whose researchers contributed to Canva Craft. Although Canva reported $4 billion in revenue last year, it recently cut its 2026 growth forecast, prompting analysts to estimate its valuation fell from $42 billion to $35 billion. The new model therefore represents a strategic move to bolster the company’s competitive position and financial outlook as it expands AI capabilities across its user base and partner ecosystems.
