Starlink seems to be working normally again in Ukraine

SpaceX has reportedly lifted the throttling of Ukraine’s Starshield service, the military‑grade variant of its Starlink satellite internet system, after a brief disruption that left Ukrainian drones without connectivity at speeds near 100 mph. Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara told reporters that Starshield appears to be working normally again, though the armed forces are still testing the restored link and have not been given an explanation for the earlier restrictions. The outage followed a ten‑day period during which some drones lost control, prompting concerns about their vulnerability on the battlefield.
The interruption coincided with a phone call from former President Donald Trump to SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk, in which Trump urged Musk to restore the service. Both Trump and Musk have publicly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with Musk recently posting that “Zelensky has gone too far.” Musk also warned that turning off Starlink would cause the Ukrainian front line to collapse immediately, describing the statement as a factual observation rather than a threat.
While the service appears to be operational again, the Ukrainian military continues to conduct tests to verify full functionality, and officials have not received a clear rationale for the temporary throttling. The episode highlights the strategic dependence of Ukraine’s defense infrastructure on privately owned satellite communications and underscores the geopolitical sensitivities surrounding the provision of such critical technology.
