Our Core Principles

Independence

News Effects has no advertiser, owner, government or other outside party able to influence which stories are selected or how they're framed. There is no commercial sales team, because there is no commercial team — see About for who runs it.

Accuracy

A story is only eligible for publication once corroborated by at least one other independent outlet. Before publishing, an automated check verifies every named person, title and figure in the rewritten brief against the original source text — a mismatch holds the story back rather than letting it go live.

Impartiality

Stories are rewritten in neutral language from the original source reporting, without added spin or editorializing. Where a story is itself commentary or analysis from a source, that's reflected in how it's framed rather than presented as straight news.

Humanity

We minimise harm. We do not identify victims without consent, do not sensationalise suffering, and apply heightened care to stories involving children, trauma and death.

How We Use AI

  • Every article's two-paragraph brief is generated by an AI model (Groq's Llama 3.3) reading the original source article, instructed to use only information present in that source, never invent names, numbers or quotes, and never copy more than a short phrase verbatim.
  • Before anything publishes, an automated fact-check step independently re-extracts every named person, title and figure from the AI's rewrite and confirms each one actually appears in the source text. A story that fails this check is held in a review queue, not published — see Corrections for a case where a name slipped through an earlier version of this process and was fixed.
  • The "6 Effects Interpreter" panels (economy, rates, health, wealth, housing) are rule-based: built from templated analysis tied to the story's category and content, not a human analyst's personal commentary, and not an AI improvising economic predictions.
  • No AI-generated text is presented as a human journalist's personal eyewitness reporting or opinion. Attribution to the original outlet is shown at the top of every article, with a link to the source.

Source Standards

  • We never pay sources for news tips or interviews.
  • We do not solicit or publish anonymous tips ourselves — every story is built from already-published reporting at cited, named outlets, with a link to the original at the top of every article.

Conflicts of Interest

  • Madalina, who built and runs News Effects (see About), discloses any material financial position in a company a story covers where relevant.
  • We do not accept payment for editorial coverage. Advertiser relationships, once any exist, will be disclosed where relevant.

Complaints & Corrections
